When "Dennis Lillee" brought an aluminium bat on the field

Hey guys,

Today I came with an awesome engrossing cricket event from the international test cricket.

As we know, the modern era cricket is becoming more entertaining day by day due to the new astonishing innovations and many delightful escapades from the modern day cricketers. But, it doesn't mean that old cricket didn't witness some strange and unordinary events. So, now we are going to talk about a famous incident happened in 'The Ashes' series in 1979.

It was the battle of two historical superpowers of cricket, yeah! you are right, they are the Ashes' contestants. In 1979, the 1st match of the series, England won the toss and elects to bowl first. Then, here comes the batting of Aussies... Everything were going smoothly like a test match, "Sir Ian Botham" was bowling well taking 4 wickets under 90 on the board only. But, it was not the interesting event.

The event comes when 8th wicket of Australia fallen down at 219, then Aussie's 10th man, Dennis Lillee (considered as one of the legendary bowlers of Australia) came to bat.

But, here everyone saw that he is carrying a bat which is made up of aluminium metal. Everyone were in a dry shock whereas, he used that bat already in an inning against West Indies (yet he got out early in that match). The on-field umpires also can't took any actions due to no such restrictions for the material of equipments and can't restrict him to bat with his aluminium beast.

As, nothing more happened at that time but become a popular news and that aluminium bat named as "comBat". It was a merely entertaining event in that times. With the beasty looking bat, Lillee managed to score 11 runs at the end of the day with a total of 232-8 on the board, but on the next day it's use rejected from the match by the complaints of both the captains. As, the bat was causing high damage to leather of the ball and according to Australian skipper, generating less power on the ball. Australia managed to put a total of 244 runs on the scoreboard.

Later, the match was won by Australia with an enourmous margin of 138 runs and England's Sir Ian Botham awarded as The Man of the Match award.(for taking 11 wickets i.e. 6 in 1st innings and 5 in 2nd innings)

It will remain an unforgettable event in world cricket history...

  • On June, 2019 that aluminium beast known as comBat, sold for 5,200 Euros in an auction in which it's base price was 3,000 Euros.
